Julie Minns for Carlisle

Julie Minns
Labour MP for Carlisle

Carlisle shaped who I am, my values and my belief in community and collective action. I am humbled to be elected as your Labour MP and promise to give something back to the city I love, and because I love what it could be even more..

My Story

I am Carlisle born and bred. My family have lived in Carlisle for generations. Ernest Lowthian, Labour’s first Parliamentary candidate in Carlisle, is my distant cousin. My Great Grandfather, John Hodgson Minns, was Chairman of the Council Highways committee that oversaw the building of the new Eden Harraby and St Nicholas Bridges.

My Dad, a painter and decorator for the Electricity Board, died from an industrial related illness in 2007. Mam was a homehelp for 30 years, always going out of her way to help others, often taking homemade meals to the people she looked after. She still lives in Denton Holme where I grew up.

I attended Robert Ferguson and Trinity Schools. Had a Saturday job in the Solway Bakery on Denton Street, and my first fulltime job was at 14MU. I was the first member of my family to go to university.

I worked in Parliament running an MP’s office and managing a busy caseload, before joining the campaigns department for the disability charity Scope and then the NSPCC. Two of my proudest achievements are making it easier for disabled people to vote and securing more funding to support disabled pupils in mainstream education.

I remained committed to helping the most vulnerable people when I worked in industry; co-authoring the first code of practice to protect children from harmful online content, creating a community fund so staff could donate to local charities and communities; and introducing British Sign Language interpretation in customer services.

I’m a former councillor and held the transport portfolio before stepping down from the council to bring-up my daughter as a single parent. When my daughter became ill I left my job and began working for myself so that I could be there for her. Today she is a 3rd year paediatric student nurse.

In my spare time I enjoy walking my dogs, leading historic Carlisle walking tours, and coldwater swimming. I can often be found swimming in Ullswater at the crack of dawn! My love of swimming is what led me to start the campaign to save Carlisle’s Turkish Baths.

Everything I have achieved, the difference I have made, my values and my politics have their roots in Carlisle. I chose to stand to give something back to the city I love. I am proud of Carlisle, of its people, of its heritage, and I am standing on a promise to campaign for it, as I have done tirelessly for the last two years.

I stood to be MP for Carlisle because I love my hometown. Because I have the skills and national experience to give Carlisle a strong voice in Parliament.

My older dog, Bailey

Without Julie’s commitment to giving local people a voice, her love of our community and her belief in Carlisle, there wouldn’t be a campaign to save Carlisle Baths and we would have lost another piece of our city’s heritage forever.

My Experience

Parliamentary Advisor

Parliamentary Advisor

In my early twenties I set up and ran the office of Keith Hill, the newly elected Labour MP for Streatham, overseeing his advice surgeries and casework.

Charity Campaigner

Charity Campaigner

At Scope I campaigned for the rights of disabled people and improved accessibility; at NSPCC I recruited thousands of volunteers to campaign to end child sexual abuse.

Policy Maker

Working in industry as a senior manager, I developed policies and practices to support and safeguard thousands of vulnerable customers, and shaped regulation that benefited millions more.

Testimonial

I have enjoyed working with Julie, a natural campaigner. She combines an eye for policy detail with passionate commitment to helping the most vulnerable. An expert on consumer regulation, Julie will be a powerful advocate for Carlisle residents hit by the Conservatives’ Cost of Living Crisis.

NATIONAL VOICE
LOCAL HEART

With over twenty years experience of national politics and Westminster, I will hit the ground running as your Labour MP. I will always put the constituency first, and provide a strong voice for Carlisle in Parliament.
